When Labour returned to power in 2025, Progress Magazine saw the perfect opportunity to relaunch its publication — re-energising its long-standing role as a platform for progressive ideas and debate.
A bold relaunch for a leading progressive magazine
As the editorial voice of Progressive Britain, the magazine needed a visual identity that captured the excitement of the moment, appealed to new audiences, and provided a creative yet practical foundation for ongoing publishing.
Having designed earlier iterations of Progress, Soapbox was well placed to help evolve its identity — balancing continuity with a confident, modern edge.
Progress Magazine has long been a space for MPs, peers, regional and national leaders and emerging political voices to explore and exchange ideas. With its relaunch, the team wanted to signal a new chapter – one that reflected the confidence and optimism of a new political landscape, while staying true to its roots as a trusted and open forum for debate.
The team at Soapbox have played a pivotal role in the relaunch of Progress magazine. Their expertise and talent have brought our vision to life, we love working with them and are excited to continue our partnership.
The Soapbox team set out to create a design that was both showstopping and functional. The concept centred on a bold typographic identity, anchored by a large, sharp PROGRESS masthead that immediately sets the tone for everything within. Every element of the layout – from headline styles to category tags – was carefully structured to maintain clarity and rhythm throughout.
Imagery plays a central role in feature stories, giving visual depth and variety to each article. Yet it’s the typography that serves as the unifying thread – a confident, consistent system that allows the magazine’s content to shine.
Turning the conceptual design into a live, printed publication brought its own creative challenges. Every real-world article and photograph demanded careful decisions on spacing, emphasis and flow. As Ian Blenkinsop, our lead editor put it, “No template really survives contact with real content – but that’s where the craft comes in: making countless small choices that bring words and images together into something that looks effortless.”
The redesigned Progress Magazine was met with enthusiasm from readers and members of the Progressive Britain community, and made a strong impression at the 2025 Labour Party Conference. The new look signalled a publication ready for a new era — one that blends beautiful design with clarity, accessibility and purpose.
