We're looking for a highly accomplished back end developer who wants to work on projects that make a real difference. You'll be a key part of our growing development team — working directly with clients and colleagues to solve complex technical problems, and helping make sure our work always meets our clients' goals and follows Drupal standards in a robust, maintainable way.

Nice to meet you. We’re Soapbox — a creative studio for ideas that matter. We work with forward-thinking organisations turning knowledge and evidence into social progress: from artificial intelligence to international development, early childhood to climate change, our clients’ work tackles some of the most important issues of our time.

About you

You have extensive knowledge and experience of Drupal (5 years+), advanced PHP and MySQL, plus:

  • Git, Bash, GNU Make, various command-line tools, Apache/nginx, DDEV
  • A good understanding of advanced object-oriented PHP — namespacing, dependency injection, etc.
  • Experience with WordPress, Symfony, Laravel or other PHP tools is a bonus, not a requirement

You’re comfortable reviewing others’ code as well as producing your own, and you’re not afraid to bring thorny problems to colleagues to work through together. You stay on top of new trends in web development and look for ways to apply them. You’re confident engaging directly with clients and explaining your proposed solutions. Fluent written and spoken English is essential.

It would also be nice if

  • You want to put your skills to work for good, helping socially progressive organisations communicate online
  • You have some experience working with non-profit clients
  • Have worked in another agency

What you’ll be doing

You’ll join a nine-strong in-house development team led by our Director of Web Design & Development and three technical leads (WordPress, Drupal, Front-end), working closely with project managers, digital designers and content strategists.

You’ll mainly build the back end of new websites and digital products, and maintain and extend existing ones. Most projects deliver an organisation’s main website, but we also build smaller sites and products — like our AI Search tool and Page-to-PDF via Puppeteer. You’ll occasionally rotate onto the support desk.

We expect staff to work autonomously and own their projects (with support when needed), so you get a real sense of accomplishment from seeing work through. You’ll usually focus on one major project at a time, sometimes picking up smaller chunks of work through our ‘Continuous Improvement’ packages.

Based in London or Bath. Fully remote can be considered (If based in the UK). Hybrid working is standard for almost everyone; we’re also open to reduced or compressed hours (our standard week is 37.5 hours across five days).

About us

We’re a flexible, fair employer, and our values run through everything we do — from the clients we choose to how we treat our staff. Many of our team have built long careers with us. Our client roster includes many of the world’s leading charities, NGOs and research organisations.

We’re committed to equality of opportunity and know a diverse range of perspectives improves our work. We particularly welcome applications from LGBTQ+ candidates, disabled candidates, and candidates from minority ethnic and religious communities.

Our studios

You’ll typically be based in Shoreditch, London, or Bath — co-working spaces with good views, snacks, barista-quality coffee and room to think. We’re also happy to consider fully remote applicants.
